WHAT'S GOING ON AT ClineCON?
What kinds of games will be played at ClineCON? ClineCON is open to war, historical, and Euro board wargaming, role playing games (RPGs), miniatures games, Collectible Card Games (CCGs) & Non Collectible Card Games (NCGs), Collectible Card Miniatures (CCMs), abstract board strategy games, historical and other miniatures, and any sort of strategy table-top gaming. Experimental events will comprise only a minority of events at ClineCON.
What Events Are Planned for ClineCON? The ClineCON Event Schedule has been posted here. Possible Events include new game demonstrations, learn and play events, and tournaments, and some unique and experimental events. Here are descriptions of Events currently scheduled for ClineCON:
GAME DESIGNER DEMOS
- Game Designer David J. Bush will demonstate three soon-to-be-published two-player, abstract strategy game designs, Lazo, Gridwar, and Trap Y, beginning at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday night! Additionally, David will be available and eager at other times to demonstrate his games. Sets will be available for up to six players to try each game.
Lazo is a three-dimensional two player abstract strategy game. The tiles stack like cannonballs. Players compete to make a loop of their color either vertically or horizontally. The tactics are sharp, and a game can end quickly, but experienced players may build a position several layers high.
Gridwar is a two player abstract strategy game using the same board and pieces as Lazo. However, Gridwar features zones of control, piece capture and movement, and piece promotion, thus making it a hybrid abstract and regular tactical wargame.
Trap Y is an abstract two player game which is played on a grid of hexagons in the overall shape of a trapezoid. It is based on a predecessor, Star Y, and uses the same pieces as Lazo and Gridwar.
Board Gaming Events
- A Grand TwixT Tournament by TwixT-master David J. Bush, designer of the Lazo/Gridwar three-dimensional abstract strategy game, will be run in three sessions. The first session will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning, and the Elimination Finals session will be held on Sunday morning. Click here for the official tournament rules page. All tournament games will be submitted and count for AREA ratings. A demonstration of the game will precede each of the first two sessions, so you can learn the game and play in the tournament immediately afterwards. Who knows, you might find a TwixT-master in yourself!
Late Announcement: The overall winner of the Grand Twixt tournament will receive their choice of either a new, shrinkwrapped copy of Powergrid or Race for the Galaxy! Prizes will be given out on Sunday when the tournament is completed.
- GO TELL THE QUEEN! HIVE learn and play tournaments will be held at ClineCON! One complete four-round tournament will be held on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m. and again on Sunday at noon, preceded by teaching the rules. The winner of each day's tournament wins a free durable HIVE game that you can play with your friends almost anywhere. To get the buzz on the tournament rules, click here.

OOPS! ClineCON will feature unique Obscure Out-of-Print Select (OOPS) boardgame events. These OOPS boardgame events are Game Mastered, slightly convention modified versions of board games that "didn't make it" (admittedly, often for good reason) in the wild world of boardgaming. Rules will be taught before the events. Come over and join in the fun, unique experience of games you may never see again!
- Time to get Medieval! Or better yet--Ancients! Ancients was a game published in the early 1990s (already ancient history to some) by 3W. It is a two-player, low-complexity, small-map game with a low number of units, suitable for teaching basic board wargaming concepts. Battles simulated range from Ancient times to the late Medieval period (1800 B.C. to 1400 A.D.), over 3,000 years of shock warfare. If you have ever wanted to try "hex and counter" style board wargaming, bring your buddy and come on back in time. This event is in the informal "learning-demos" format. Rules will be taught to anyone who is interested, the only prize is the experience! Ancients will be available beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday
- J.U.M.P. into Midnight! Calling all Space Grunts for a Saturday night game of J.U.M.P. Into the Unknown, the OOPS Evil Polish Brothers' 1999 interstellar wargame about the "Justified Use of Military Power." No experience necessary, the rules will be taught before the game. This Game Mastered version of the game will seat four players beginning at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday night and will be played with one or more variants and finish up sometime early Sunday morning. The presence of a Game Master, who is not playing in the game, will allow for secret building and movement, and other hidden mechanics. So if you are feeling a little Xenophobic, Nostalgic, Selfish or Savage after a long day of tournament play, come on over and J.U.M.P. into Midnight! The winner will receive free Sunday admission.
