IT'S ALIVE, IT'S ALIVE! IT'S THE HIVE TOURNAMENT AT ClineCON!
Bzz...When: One HIVE tournament will be held each day preceded by a teaching of the rules. The HIVE event held each day will be a complete tournament and the event will run continuously until the tournament results are final. Consult the final schedule when published to determine the times.
Bzzz...What: All HIVE sets needed for the tournament will be provided. Only the standard game will be used (no mosquitos).
Bzzzz...How Many: Each tournament is limited to ten players, who will be listed on a first-come, first-seated basis. The winner of Saturday's tournament cannot play in the Sunday tournament.
HIVE TOURNAMENT FORMAT
- In the first round, each player will play one game against a randomly selected opponent.
- The five winners of the first round games advance to the second round. Additionally, one randomly selected loser advances to the second round. The remaining losers from the first round are eliminated from the tournament.
- In the second round, each player will play one game against a randomly selected opponent.
- The three winners from the second round games advance to the third round. Additionally, one randomly selected loser advances to the third round. The remaining losers from the second round are eliminated from the tournament.
- In the third round, each player will play one game against a randomly selected opponent.
- The two winners from the third round advance to the final. The losers from the third round are eliminated.
- The two remaining players play one final game. The winner of the final game gets a free HIVE set.
Etiquette: Pieces not in play will be kept in a box or on a mat off the tabletop. On your turn, once you place a peice anywhere on the table, that peice must be put in play. If you touch one of your pieces during your turn, that piece must be moved if possible. You may not move a piece and then move it back and move another piece. Please do not touch opposing player's pieces. Players should play at a fairly brisk pace, averaging about one turn per minute or less (two minutes or less for both players). Please be considerate of your opponent and other players.
Draws: Rounds will be limited to 30 minutes each. Games that do not finish in the alotted time may be called a draw by the Event Master if neither player will concede. Games may also (rarely) end in a draw. The winner of drawn games will be determined randomly so that the tournament can proceed. If it becomes apparent that a player is delaying for a draw, the Event Master may declare the other player the winner of the game when the time for the round has expired.
Numbers: The tournament requires even numbers of players. If an odd number of players sign up, the Event Master will play in the tournament until eliminated. If only eight players arrive for the tournament, the seats in the second round will be filled by randomly selecting additional losers from the first round. If only six players arrive for the tournament, all players play the first round (for practice), then all automatically advance to the second round. If four or less players show for the tournament, it will be canceled or postponed.
Prime Numbers: The total number of games played in each tournament will be eleven--the same as the number of pieces on each side in the HIVE game. The total number of games played at ClineCON in the two tournaments is twenty-two--equal to the number of pieces in a HIVE set!
